Scarborough Fair is a wonderful English song from the folk repertoire with a rather charming history. The lyrics have something in common with an obscure Scottish ballad, The Elfin Knight, which traces back since the seventeenth century. The version today denoted by that title was recorded in 1956 by Audrey Coppard for Folkways, by Ewan MacColl & Peggy Seeger (1957) [Riverside LP "Matching Songs of the British Isles and America"], and Shirley Collins (1959) [on his second album "False True Lovers"]. Martin Carthy arranged a guitar+vocal version for his debut album, which simply bears his name, issued in 1965 for Fontana. Thanks to volksMusik08 this version, with its bare and rigidly acoustic sound thin but of great historical value can be heard on Youtube and is the first that I propose:

In the late '60s Scarborough Fair became suddenly and unexpectedly a worldwide success adored by the young audience. This happened when the version of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who had already recorded it in 1966 for their album "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme", was included two years later in the cult film "The Graduate” soundtrack. The version of the ballad made by Paul and Art is as always impeccable on the melodic side and beutifully rendered as for vocals harmony, but according to the chronicles it caused some resentment in Martin Carthy, who had introduced the song to Simon, and felt the cover notes should have referenced the traditional origin of the song.
