Pasqua 1916 - Easter 1916 - The Foggy Dew

Tra il 24 e il 30 Aprile di 95 anni fa, giorni di Pasqua proprio come oggi, si consumò in Irlanda l'evento noto come "Easter Rising".
Forze indipendentiste irlandesi si impossessarono di alcuni palazzi pubblici a Dublino, tra cui la Posta Centrale, e lottarono strenuamente per l'agognata libertà del loro paese del dominio dell'Impero britannico. Malgrado il bagno di sangue che seguì (si contarono circa 450 morti, metà dei quali civili disarmati), si ritiene che quell'evento aprì la strada, negli anni successivi, all'indipendenza della Repubblica Irlandese, che effettivamente si realizzò cinque anni più tardi.
Molte canzoni della tradizione popolare ricordano quell'evento: tra le mie preferite "The Foggy Dew". La prima versione da me ascoltata fu quella registrata da Alan Stivell dal vivo all'Olympia di Parigi, nel 1972.
Molto struggente la versione resa qui da Sinead O'Connor, la cui voce rievoca la tragedia di quei giorni, accompagnata dai Chieftains (registrata per il loro "The Long Black Veil" nel 1995).

Between April 24 and 30, 95 years ago, that fell after Easter just like the current year, was consumed in Ireland the event known as "Easter Rising".
Irish separatist forces took possession of some public buildings in Dublin, including the Post Office, and fought fiercely for the much awaited freedom of their country from British rule. Despite the bloodshed that followed (as many as 450 peaple were shot dead, half of them unarmed civilians), it is considered that event paved the way, in the following years, to the independence of the Republic of Ireland, that actually came true five years later . Many traditional folk songs were dedicated to that event: one of my favorites is "The Foggy Dew." The first version I heard was that recorded by Alan Stivell Live at the Olympia in Paris in 1972. A very poignant and mournful version is rendered here by Sinead O'Connor, whose voice evokes the tragedy of those days, accompanied by the Chieftains (registered for their "The Long Black Veil" in 1995).
